Marcijuš Tomislav - Baranja Dreaming
Every loss from your life takes you back to some beginning. Every leaving teaches you to discover something new within yourself. We are the product of all those who were before us. Your family's legacy, good and bad. It's all part of who you are. Life in the countryside and the city is not the same. Everything in the village, even the loss of loved ones, is a matter of the community, not the individual. So it is with the way of life. As a child, unfortunately, I did not understand this best. This series of photographs are part of one community, environment, and learning. Sometimes we figure some things out on time, and sometimes we don't. Time and people pass, and we let them by because we have struggled with some of our unrest.
Baranja is a place of my roots, my family. A dreamy region in Eastern Croatia where life passes slowly and where you feel nostalgia for all seasons. Baranja is a diverse and tame landscape where the misty fields remind me of a dream from which I never woke up. Where winter is so endless and where the arson has its beauty of scent. Baranja is a melancholy part of Croatia that has influenced my work, behavior, and way of life. In her, all life is one!
It is not just about nature and landscapes. This story is about everything we leave out, perhaps more valuable than what we do, what we are forced to do or think we should do. From the perspective of my earlier years, it is now apparent to me that I missed some things.
In searching for something better and more significant, let's forget about space and the people around us. The project shows life in the countryside and the desire to escape from it, not knowing that I'm growing up all the time and were in the most beautiful environment with the most important people. Likewise, we don't look at minor signs along the way that sometimes lead to big things we dreamed of before.
A series of photos recounts my journey and questions how much control we have over ourselves and how we influence what we become. The series is a selection of photographs taken over the last ten years.
When you leave forever the place that shaped you and your work, you realize you can never escape from that place. You feel as if you are carrying all those places you photographed at the beginning with you wherever you go and unconsciously transfer all the feelings to your future works.
