Belden Carlson - Havana
This photographic ethnography investigates the adolescent experience in Havana, within the context of Cuba’s secondary education system. Boasting one of the strongest public education systems in Latin America, Cuba holds a 97% literacy rate for young people aged 15-24. With this in mind, this documentary photojournalism work and research was conducted over the course of a month working in secondary schools in Center City Havana, and the following project investigates how secondary, preparational schools, technical schools, and University experiences influence adolescents aspirations and expectations for their future. These portraits also serve as a twenty-first century documentation of teenage fashion, relationship with technology and resource, and adolescent attitude in the city of Havana.
